Slovenská Grafia: A Decade of Print Quality Innovation

How one of Central Europe's most decorated print houses uses Mellow Colour's PrintSpec platform to protect global brand integrity - press-side, in real time.

Client: Slovenská Grafia, Slovakia

Partnership: 10 Years

Specialism: Fast Web Offset / FMCG Packaging

Software: PrintSpec / PrintSpecThree

When global FMCG brands and major supermarket groups commission print runs, the margin for colour error is zero. Brand equity, retail shelf impact and customer recognition all hinge on colour that is not just close, but provably and measurably correct.

It is this uncompromising standard that has driven Slovenská Grafia to build one of the most rigorous print quality management workflows in Central Europe.

Based in Slovakia, Slovenská Grafia has established itself as a leading web offset producer, serving large global FMCG clients with consistently high throughput and equally consistent quality.

At the heart of that quality infrastructure is a close, decade long partnership with Mellow Colour.

Key Stats:

·      Over 10 years partnering with Mellow Colour

·      Active member of Mellow Colour 100 Club Member (ISO 12647 Proficient)

·      9+ active ISO and environmental certifications

The Challenge: Moving from visual proof, to measurable truth

Before implementing Mellow Colour, Slovenská Grafia's quality workflow relied primarily on certified virtual proofing - a credible baseline, but one that depends on human judgement rather than quantified data.

As clients grew in scale and their colour requirements grew in precision, the team recognised a need to capture and verify print results against defined numerical standards: specific paper substrates, FOGRA profiles and ISO tolerances.

The shift to PrintSpec provided exactly that capability - the ability to measure, benchmark and demonstrate conformance on every press run.

Implementation: Operators at the heart of the workflow

Getting an organisation of Slovenská Grafia's scale to embed a new measurement culture across an entire press floor takes sustained commitment. The implementation involved developing internal procedures, systematic workflows and, critically, training press operators directly.

Today, measurements at Slovenská Grafia are taken online, press-side by the operators themselves during live production, using devices including the X-Rite eXact and Techcon spectrophotometers.

This is an important operational distinction. Embedding measurement into the hands of the people running the presses, rather than routing it through a separate QC department, reduces reaction time and keeps colour decisions close to where ink hits the paper.

The rollout of PrintSpecThree in 2025 introduced a new interface that required fresh onboarding for both the Press Department and the Quality Department.

Slovenská Grafia's experienced team provided detailed feedback throughout the transition, and their suggestions, drawn from nearly a decade of practical use, were incorporated directly into the software's functionality. This is the kind of collaborative development loop ensures the Mellow Colour software truly works in production, not just in a demo environment.

"It's always interesting to partner with innovative printers who don't just meet challenges but also continually step up to them, pushing technology to reach new heights. Working with printers like Slovenská Grafia really does redefine what is possible in the world of print."

The colour team: Cross-departmental quality ownership

One of the more notable structural decisions at Slovenská Grafia is the formation of a dedicated Colour Team, a standing group that brings together the Production Director, Head of Pre-press, Head of Press and the full Quality Department for regular strategic meetings.

In practice this means colour management is not siloed.

Challenges are discussed before they escalate into production issues. Compensation curve adjustments, substrate changes and test schedules are planned collectively. Company management actively supports the team's conclusions, including capital investment decisions. This kind of joined-up thinkiing is what allows a large-volume printer to sustain the kind of consistency that global brands demand.

Slovenská Grafia also notes that one of their most significant ongoing challenges is declining raw material quality, a real-world constraint that faces the wider offset industry. Their response is to lean harder into measurement and process control. If the inputs are variable, the system needs to be robust enough to compensate and still deliver conforming output.

Certifications: A framework for confidence

Slovenská Grafia holds an extensive range of certifications, reflecting their commitment across quality, environmental responsibility, workforce safety, and information security:

ISO 9001 · ISO 14001 · ISO 27001 · ISO 45001 · ISO 28000 · ISO 12647-2:2013

FSC · PEFC · EU Ecolabel · UGRA Offset Certified · Mellow Colour 100 Club

Their annual Mellow Colour audit, which is a two-day, highly detailed process, sits alongside these credentials as one of the most operationally demanding audits the site undertakes.

In the words of the Slovenská Grafia team, they consider the Mellow Colour certificate to be "of a higher standard than certificates provided by some regional agencies".

The ISO 12647-2:2013 printing certification in particular has proven to be a tangible commercial asset, making a strong impression when onboarding new clients and during business negotiations with the Schwarz Group and other major retail accounts.

In their own words: The Slovenská Grafia team reflects

Q: What did the workflow look like before Mellow Colour?

Quality inspection relied primarily on certified virtual proofing. Once PrintSpec was introduced, it became possible to capture measurable, required print results and verify them against defined standards - based on specific paper types, FOGRA profiles and ISO tolerances - rather than making judgements from visual comparisons alone.

Q: What have been the biggest challenges in print quality management?

The steadily declining quality of raw input materials is the single most significant factor affecting finished product quality. The challenge is setting print conditions robust enough that finished output still meets customer requirements despite substrate variability. That's why cross-departmental communication - through our Colour Team - is so important. Prevention and preparation beat reactive fire-fighting every time.

Q: What's the practical advantage of PrintSpec for press operators?

The graphical display of results makes the data genuinely accessible, visuals are more intuitive than raw numbers for most operators. Beyond colour evaluation, PrintSpec lets us compare device performance head-to-head, and creating or adjusting compensation curves is now done directly through scale measurements in the software. Previously, generating curves required hours of printing colour target sheets, manual measurement, and separate processing. That time has been substantially reduced.

Q: What have the certifications delivered commercially?

Clients in the Schwarz Group are fully supported by the programme, and we attribute part of our success in retaining those accounts to the confidence the Mellow Colour certification provides. The annual audit cycle, and the year-round preparation it demands, keeps our processes sharp. We've also taken multiple awards at the Golden Seal competition, which evaluates print quality across Slovakia, including categories for print and post-press processing.

Q: Where is Slovenská Grafia headed?

Despite global headwinds for offset, we're committed to leading the market, not just in Slovakia but more broadly. Ongoing investment in automation, robotisation and new post-press methods keeps us competitive. The relationship with Mellow Colour continues to push us forward, not only because client demands increase every year, but because the annual audit provides a structured opportunity to find new improvements.

Why this partnership works

The Slovenská Grafia story illustrates what a mature PrintSpec deployment looks like in practice: measurement embedded at press-side, operator ownership of data, cross-functional governance through the Colour Team, and an annual audit cycle that drives continuous process improvement rather than simply validating the status quo.

It also demonstrates the value of a long-term technology partnership. When a printer with deep production experience feeds practical insights back into software development (as Slovenská Grafia has done across nearly ten years) the result is a platform that solves real-world problems, not theoretical ones. That feedback loop benefits every printer in the Mellow Colour network.

For printers working with colour-critical brand work at volume, the takeaway is straightforward: measurable, documented, independently audited quality control is increasingly the baseline expectation from global brand owners.

Slovenská Grafia built that infrastructure early, and the commercial returns are clear.
